Did you know Audley End Estate encompasses over 500 acres of woodland?
These woodlands are central to our ongoing stewardship of Audley End Estate, contributing to its character, heritage and natural environment. Managed with care and a long-term vision, they are thoughtfully stewarded to remain resilient, diverse and productive for generations to come.
What Woodland Stewardship Looks Like at Audley End Estate
Our approach to woodland stewardship focuses on balancing the needs of the landscape while supporting a range of environmental and practical benefits. From providing valuable wildlife habitats and preserving traditional estate practices to supporting sustainable timber production and climate resilience, the woodlands play an important role in the future of Audley End Estate.
This work sits alongside our wider farming and woodlands operations across the Estate, where careful stewardship underpins everything from crop rotation to habitat conservation.
Stewardship in Support of Biodiversity
Through careful stewardship, these landscapes continue to thrive while supporting the rich biodiversity that makes the Estate such a special place. This ties closely with other conservation work underway, including our efforts restoring the River Cam, which is helping to enhance habitats beyond the woodland itself.
As the seasons change, the woodlands offer an ever-evolving backdrop of colour, texture and wildlife, enjoyed by visitors, residents and the wider community alike. Many visitors experience the results of this stewardship first-hand along routes such as the Harcamlow Way and the Three Village Walk, both of which pass through some of the Estate’s most treasured natural spaces.
If you’ve captured a favourite moment among the trees, we’d love to see it. Share your photographs with us or tag us on social media.
A Legacy of Woodland Heritage and Craftsmanship
Our woodlands are rich in both history and craftsmanship. Discover how timber from a storm-felled oak on the Estate found a new purpose in the National Trust’s Sutton Hoo ship reconstruction project here, and look out for an upcoming behind-the-scenes insight into the work of the woodsmen who help shape and care for these landscapes for future generations.
