A strong focus on environmental care guides the management of the working rural landscape at Audley End Estate in Saffron Walden. In September 2025, we partnered with Affinity Water to enhance the ecological value of a stretch of the River Cam that flows through the estate.
Chalk streams are a globally rare habitat, with the majority found in southern England. These unique waterways are known for their clear water and ecological importance, yet many have been impacted by historic modification and extraction, leading to reduced flows. Over time, this can lead to uniform river channels with limited habitat diversity, affecting the wildlife they support.
At Audley End Estate, where sustainable farming and environmental stewardship go hand in hand, this project focused on restoring the natural character of the river. Healthy rivers depend on variation – faster, oxygen-rich sections alongside slower, sheltered areas help create the conditions needed for a wide range of species.
Working with Affinity Water, sections of the river were carefully narrowed to increase flow rates, while new backwaters were created to provide calmer habitats. These quieter areas are particularly important for fish, offering shelter and spawning grounds, while also supporting birds and other wildlife across the Essex countryside.

A key part of the restoration involved reintroducing gravel to the riverbed. Much of this material had been removed during the 1940s, and its return helps reinstate natural river processes, improving both water flow and habitat quality.
This work reflects our long-term approach at Audley End Estate, balancing heritage, farming, and conservation to support a resilient landscape. By restoring natural systems like the River Cam, we are helping to ensure that this important environment continues to thrive for future generations.
